A worried citizen has reached out to the government about the bad state of facilities at Garba Daho Primary School in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Pupils go to this school despite the rundown classrooms, lack of furniture, and dirty toilets. This raises serious concerns about their safety, health, and ability to learn.
In a petition dated 13 October, Ismail Rabiu, who is involved in education from Garba Daho Ward, asked the authorities to fix the school quickly. He called for better classrooms, basic learning tools, and improved sanitation.
Mr Rabiu requested the Plateau State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), the Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and the Jos North Local Government chairman to check the school and take urgent steps to make things better.
When a PREMIUM TIMES reporter visited the school, they saw the crumbling classrooms, cracked floors, and not enough furniture for the pupils.
The toilets at the school were also in bad shape, raising worries about hygiene and possible health dangers.
The state of the facilities shows the problems pupils face in getting a safe and good place to learn. Damaged buildings and poor sanitation can affect their health and learning ability.
Mr Rabiu expressed worry that the pupils do not have basic items, like desks, chairs, and enough teaching materials.
He also called on the authorities to make emergency repairs a priority.
“Our children deserve to learn in dignity. Save them today,” Mr Rabiu said in the petition.
Mr Rabiu urged SUBEB and the Plateau State Government to visit the school and find out what quick fixes are needed for the building and sanitation issues.
He stated that fixing the school's situation is necessary to keep pupils safe and give them a good place to learn.
Despite the community's importance, he said the primary school needs urgent help from the relevant authorities.
Mr Rabiu emphasized that his request is not meant to challenge the local government leaders but to highlight the needs of the children in the public school.
He called on the Jos North Local Government chairman, SUBEB, and the state government to ensure that pupils have proper classrooms, enough furniture, necessary learning materials, and clean toilets.
The petition asks for a physical inspection of the school and quick action to solve the problems identified.
