Pope Leo XIV brought some laughter during his flight to Spain on Friday. He shared his preference for Real Madrid when asked about football during a chat with journalists.
Vatican News says the Pope made this comment while talking to more than 80 journalists on his Apostolic Journey to Madrid. This is the first stop in a week-long visit to Spain.
During this friendly exchange, a journalist asked him if he supported Real Madrid or Barcelona. Both teams are Spain's most successful football clubs.
With a smile, the Pope answered, “That’s easy: the Pope is for all teams, but Robert Prevost is for Real Madrid!” His response made everyone laugh and became one of the fun moments of the flight.
Pope Leo XIV is in Spain for meetings with church communities, civil leaders, and the faithful. His visit will also take him to Madrid, Barcelona, and the Canary Islands.
In the same conversation, the Pope talked about global issues. He called for dialogue in conflict situations and showed concern about ongoing international crises.
He emphasized the need for peace efforts, especially in Ukraine. He also mentioned the situation in Lebanon, showing the Church’s support for those affected by conflict and instability.
The Pope also addressed the problem of abuse within the Church. He highlighted the importance of focusing on victims and ensuring accountability and healing.
