A pregnant woman, Fauziyya Abdulsalam, said on Monday that she wants to return the N50,000 bride price she got after her husband, Ishaq Idris, sent her a divorce letter.

Fauziyya asked the court to end her marriage with Mr Idris using Khul’i. This is a type of divorce where a woman gives back the bride price to be free from the marriage.

She told the court she is seven months pregnant. She also wants her ex-husband to keep taking care of her during the pregnancy.

Ishaq Idris agreed that the bride price was N50,000. But he asked the court for more time to try and fix things with his wife.

The efforts to reconcile did not work out. Ishaq then sent a letter to Fauziyya declaring that he was divorcing her on the day the case was postponed.

The judge, Yakubu Abdullahi, explained that a woman can ask for Khul’i during her iddah. Iddah is a waiting period of three menstrual cycles for divorced women before they can marry again.

“I, Yakubu Abdullahi, the judge in Shari’a court II, Magajin Gari, hereby dissolve the union between Ishaq Idris and Fauziyya Abdulsalam based on Khul’i,” he announced.

The judge told Fauziyya to file a new case to seek support for her pregnancy from her husband.
