Ousmane Dembele missed a penalty but later scored as Paris Saint-Germain came from behind to win 3-1 away at Strasbourg on Saturday. This victory put PSG at the top of the French Ligue 1 table.
PSG started poorly, going down to an early goal by Giovanni Reyna from the United States. Reyna scored for Strasbourg at the Stade de la Meinau. Dembele had a chance to equalise when he received a penalty in the 72nd minute but missed the shot.
Dembele quickly turned things around. He first assisted Illia Zabarnyi to equalise in the 78th minute. Then, with just five minutes left, Dembele scored to put PSG ahead.
In stoppage time, Dembele helped Desire Doue score PSG's third goal. This win marked PSG's fourth consecutive victory in Ligue 1 and their sixth straight win, including Champions League matches.
After a rough start, where they did not win any of their first three league matches, PSG now has 14 points from seven games. They sit at the top of the table based on goal difference over Monaco, who will play Lorient on Sunday.
Other teams like Lille, Rennes, Paris FC, and Lyon could also climb above PSG in the standings this weekend.
This match was one of PSG's toughest tests this season. It came just three days after their 4-2 Champions League win against Manchester City and three days before they face Barcelona.
Coach Luis Enrique made significant changes to the lineup, swapping out eight players from the City match. Dembele started on the bench, likely to rest him for the upcoming Barcelona game.
Strasbourg took the lead in the 17th minute. Reyna received a pass from Gessime Yassine just inside the box. He turned and shot low past goalkeeper Matvey Safonov at the near post.
PSG was thankful for Safonov's brilliant save that denied Conrad Harder just after halftime. After that, Enrique brought on Dembele and Doue to turn the game around.
PSG won a penalty after a VAR review showed that a shot from Doue hit Pape Demba Diop's arm. But Dembele, who scored a penalty in May’s Champions League final against Arsenal, missed this spot-kick.
Despite the penalty miss, Dembele quickly assisted Zabarnyi for the equaliser with a precise cross. Then he took control of the ball outside the box and scored to make it 2-1.
That marked his first Ligue 1 goal of the season, adding to three goals he scored in the Champions League. Dembele then received a long kick from Safonov and found Ferran Torres, who set up Doue to finish the game.
