Mika Godts scored his first goal for Paris Saint-Germain as the team overcame injuries to key players. They beat Lyon 2-0 at home on Monday, moving to the top of Ligue 1.
Godts, a Belgian international who joined PSG from Ajax, came off the bench. He set up Senny Mayulu for a goal in the 72nd minute that broke the deadlock at the Parc des Princes.
Godts then scored himself to secure the win. This victory marked PSG's eighth straight win in all competitions, putting them one point ahead of Rennes at the top of the French league.
The match was supposed to happen on Sunday but was pushed back by a day. Paris police made the request to focus resources due to ongoing violent protests in the city.
This change in schedule clashed with the Ballon d’Or ceremony happening in London. Ten PSG players were among the 30 nominees for this top football award.
Included in the nominees were last year's winner Ousmane Dembele and Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. Kvaratskhelia was a standout player for PSG last season as they won their second consecutive Champions League title.
Both Dembele and Kvaratskhelia missed this match due to injuries from last week’s 4-2 win over Barcelona. Kvaratskhelia is expected to be out for months after tearing a ligament in his knee.
Last year, Dembele received his Ballon d’Or award in a Paris theatre while PSG lost 1-0 to Marseille. That game was also postponed due to stormy weather.
This time, PSG, missing Nuno Mendes and captain Marquinhos due to injuries, stayed focused. They achieved their fifth straight Ligue 1 win, though it took a while to convert their chances into goals.
Godts replaced Joao Neves just before the hour mark. He played the ball to Mayulu at the edge of the box, and the 20-year-old scored with a powerful shot into the corner.
Lyon threatened twice in the first half. Julien Duranville and Zachary Athekame forced good saves from Matvey Safonov.
Lyon could have taken the top spot with a win, but PSG secured the three points. In the 84th minute, Quentin Ndjantou passed to Godts, who found the net with a well-placed shot.
Rennes had briefly taken the top spot for 24 hours after a 3-0 victory over Strasbourg on Sunday. Lille and Monaco are two points behind PSG after a 1-1 draw.
Lyon is in fifth place, just ahead of Paris FC on goal difference. Both teams are three points behind the reigning champions PSG.
