Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan knocked out former champions Eintracht Frankfurt and Wolfsburg from the Women’s Champions League on Wednesday in thrilling qualifying matches.
Sakina Karchaoui scored two goals as PSG netted four times in extra-time against 10-player Frankfurt. The game was tied after 90 minutes, with both teams needing more time to decide the winner.
Frankfurt fell behind 1-0 in Paris and lost a player when Australian forward Hayley Raso got a second yellow card on 66 minutes. This left them with only 10 players.
Swedish player Rebecka Blomqvist equalised for Frankfurt just 10 minutes later, pushing the game into extra-time with the aggregate score at 2-2.
However, Frankfurt could not keep up in extra-time as PSG scored four goals to win 6-2 on aggregate. “We really want to win at home, I couldn’t see myself playing a year without the Champions League,” Karchaoui said to reporters.
“Extra-time came down to mental strength, we showed character,” she added.
In Milan, a late goal from Elisa Polli pushed Inter into extra-time after they lost the first leg in Germany 2-0. They matched that score in regular time, making it 2-2 on aggregate.
Wolfsburg took the lead again thanks to Pole Weronika Arasniewicz. But Bosnian Marija Milinkovic scored in injury time at the end of extra-time, making it 3-3 and sending the game to penalties.
Mara Alber missed her penalty for Wolfsburg, and Ivana scored the winning penalty for Inter. This meant Wolfsburg, who won the tournament in 2013 and 2014, lost 5-4 on penalties after the match ended 3-3.
