Quadri Aruna Supports Eko 2026 to Find New Talents

Africa table tennis star Quadri Aruna has backed the first National Intermediate Games, called Eko 2026. He sees this event as a chance to discover Nigeria's next generation of sports talents.

From October 1 to 15, Lagos will host the first edition of the Games. Over 15,000 athletes from all over Nigeria will come to compete in 28 sports at 10 venues.

Aruna's support came during a visit to Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso. Omotoso is also the chairman of the Media and Publicity Sub-Committee for the games.

With his wife, Ganiat, and their children with him, Aruna shared his excitement about the multi-sport event. He said, “Sports in Nigeria has faced challenges, but this initiative is the best way to restore our lost glory.” He highlighted the need to focus on grassroots sports.

He talked about how Lagos helped his career. He pointed out the state's ongoing support for sports under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. For Aruna, the Games are a great chance for young athletes to test themselves and grow.

“They should embrace it, give their best, enjoy the experience, and learn as much as possible to succeed in life,” he said. Aruna remembered his early days in Oyo town. He picked up a racket at the age of seven and played for fun, never thinking he would be among the best in the world.

“This event is for all Nigerian youths,” he said. “They must be disciplined, determined, and eager to learn, and believe in themselves. Just as people say ‘Oyo to the World,’ they too can rise from their towns to the world stage.”

Omotoso praised Aruna’s support, calling it symbolic. He said, “His endorsement shows what is possible when you put your mind to something.”

“Aruna himself started just like many of the athletes who will compete. Seeing him encourage them will inspire energy, determination, and purpose. From the National Intermediate Games, they too can rise to the world stage and showcase their talent.”
