Real Madrid has welcomed FIFA’s decision to drop its plan for private investment in the World Cup. This decision came after FIFA faced strong criticism from UEFA and other football groups.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino had to backtrack on Friday due to the backlash. Real Madrid said, “Our club believes this is good news for football, for its institutions and, above all, for the millions of fans of our beloved sport.”
They also thanked UEFA and other groups for opposing the plan. “Real Madrid wishes to express its gratitude to UEFA, to the confederations and federations, and to all the institutions that firmly and responsibly opposed this project. Their unity and sense of duty have protected football at a decisive moment.”
Madrid was part of the European Super League that failed in 2021. In February 2026, they reached an agreement with UEFA to improve relations after years of tension.
FIFA announced plans on Tuesday to create a commercial arm to manage major events like the World Cup and Club World Cup. This new body would allow private investment, which Infantino said could bring in $4.2 billion.
UEFA led the fight against FIFA’s plan. They stated they would not take part in any FIFA competitions and expressed a lack of trust in Infantino. He has faced a lot of pressure in recent days.
