Real Madrid scored three goals in the last minutes to turn around a two-goal deficit and beat AS Roma 4-3 in a thrilling UEFA Champions League match at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday.
Reports from Spanish media Cadena SER and Real Madrid's own Managing Madrid say that the visitors came back from being down 3-1 to win with late goals from Carlos Espí, Endrick and Antonio Rüdiger.
Roma seemed ready to win after leading 3-1. Marten de Roon started the scoring, and Donyell Malen added two goals in the second half.
But Madrid fought back, scoring three times late in the game to take all three points.
De Roon put Roma in front in the 20th minute with a shot that deflected off Madrid defender Ibrahima Konaté, leaving goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois wrong-footed.
Madrid answered five minutes later when Kylian Mbappé scored to equalize at 1-1.
Roma took the lead again soon after halftime, with Malen scoring in the 51st minute. He netted his second goal in the 57th minute, making it 3-1 for the hosts.
Madrid had a tough time dealing with Roma’s attack for most of the match, but their late substitutions changed the game.
Espí cut the deficit in the 83rd minute. Just two minutes later, Endrick scored to level the match at 3-3.
Rüdiger then completed Madrid’s comeback with a goal in the 90th minute, sealing a 4-3 victory after it looked like they might lose.
This win keeps Madrid’s strong start in the Champions League under José Mourinho, who returned to face Roma in Italy.
The result denied Roma a home win, despite Malen’s two goals and De Roon’s opener.
Madrid’s three late goals turned a likely defeat into an exciting away win, showing how their substitutes made a big difference at the end.
