The Premier League shared details on Monday about four key VAR decisions from Matchweek four. This includes Phil Foden's red card for Manchester City against Manchester United and Erling Haaland’s goal, which was first disallowed for offside.
Foden got a red card in the 23rd minute during Manchester City’s 1-0 win at Old Trafford. He made contact with Bruno Fernandes' stomach with his feet.
The Premier League Match Centre said the referee’s choice to give Foden a red card for violent conduct was checked and confirmed by VAR.
“Red card Phil Foden, kick out into the body of Bruno,” the referee said. The VAR added, “That looks like a clear red card to me. Looks to be a secondary movement. Confirming the red card for Manchester City No.47.”
After Foden's dismissal, VAR was involved again in the second half when Haaland scored for City in the 59th minute. The assistant referee flagged him for offside, but VAR found that Haaland was actually onside. They recommended that the goal stand.
The Premier League Match Centre also explained that Manchester City’s Fernandez was offside but did not touch the ball. This meant Haaland’s goal counted, helping City to a 1-0 victory over their rivals.
Awoniyi's Red Card Confirmed
Coventry City striker Taiwo Awoniyi also had his red card reviewed and confirmed by VAR during Sunday’s 5-0 loss to Brighton. Awoniyi received a straight red card in the 53rd minute for elbowing Brighton defender Max De Cuyper.
The Match Centre reported that the referee’s decision was checked by VAR. The assistant referee stated that Awoniyi “caught him in the face with his elbow.” The referee then confirmed his decision, giving a red card for violent conduct.
The VAR noted, “There’s a movement. Confirming the on-field decision of red card for violent conduct.”
Disasi's Red Card Also Upheld
Crystal Palace defender Axel Disasi was sent off in his team’s 3-2 loss to Ipswich Town. Disasi got a straight red card in the 34th minute after his boot struck Ipswich forward Jack Clarke high on the shin.
The Match Centre stated that the referee’s decision to send off Disasi for serious foul play was checked and confirmed by VAR.
“I’m going red card, the contact is high,” said referee Chris Kavanagh. The VAR agreed, saying, “For me, he catches him with studs, and it’s high on the shin. Confirming the decision of red card for Crystal Palace No 5. Exactly as described on-field.
