Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on women of the All Progressives Congress in Cross River State to step up grassroots efforts. She wants them to secure votes for the party in the upcoming 2027 general elections.
Tinubu encouraged the women to show their dedication through door-to-door campaigns, market visits, church gatherings, and prayer meetings. She emphasized that political support must turn into votes at polling units.
The First Lady made these remarks at an APC women’s strategic meeting in Calabar on Sunday. She also urged party members to embrace unity, love, and reconciliation as the elections approach.
A statement from the party was shared with PUNCH Online on Wednesday.
At the meeting, Tinubu, alongside Dr Betta Edu, who is the Co-Director of Women Mobilisation of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, challenged the women to rally their supporters at the grassroots. She stressed the need for effective mobilization in their communities.
“Go back to your polling units and gather your people, beginning with your women. Let them begin to canvass, door to door, Church to Church, prayer meeting to prayer meeting, market to market, by your result we will know who is who,” she said.
She urged everyone in the party to set aside their differences and strive for a common goal. Tinubu called on them to mobilise support for the APC at all levels.
“We must vote APC top to bottom. Don’t confuse our voters. Everyone should vote for APC, double your mobilisation at this critical time, please,” she stated.
Tinubu assured the women of support from party leadership. She added that their performance at the grassroots would show how committed they are.
The meeting was organized by the Women Mobilisation Directorate of the APC Presidential Campaign Council. The aim was to strengthen the party’s grassroots structures in Cross River State before the 2027 elections.
Also speaking was the wife of the Cross River State Governor, Bishop Eyoanwan Otu. She urged APC women to unite and forgive each other for the sake of the party.
Otu encouraged them to set aside personal issues and stay focused on their duties, even if their efforts go unrecognized.
“Whatever it is that has been bothering us, whatever we think has been our pain, let’s bury the hatchet and move on,” she said.
She urged the women to remain consistent in their work, stating that doing what is right will lead to success.
“Whether they like it or not, whether they love you or not, whether they like your face or not, just keep doing what you’re doing. Do the right thing. Consistency will produce the result,” she added.
Otu mentioned that her efforts come from a desire to improve the lives of residents, not from a need for public recognition.
She further encouraged the women to take the party’s message to their communities, polling units, churches, and businesses while maintaining existing political structures ahead of the elections.
The meeting also included an empowerment program for women. It attracted the wife of the Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, female lawmakers, commissioners, local government chairmen and vice-chairmen, councillors, political appointees, female candidates, and other women stakeholders from all 18 local government areas.
The participants also discussed ways to strengthen the party’s presence at polling units, wards, and local government areas before the 2027 elections.
Cross River is one of the states where the APC is building its grassroots structures ahead of the 2027 elections. The party aims to solidify its position in the state after Otu became governor in 2023.
