The House of Representatives will meet for an urgent session on Monday, 15 June, to discuss a new extension for the capital expenditure part of the 2025 Appropriation Act.

This emergency meeting comes just days after the House closed its last session until 7 July to mark the end of its third legislative year in the 10th session.

On Sunday, the Acting Clerk of the House, Ibrahim Sidi, sent a memo to all members about the special sitting. He urged them to be present.

The memo states that the session will start at 11:00 a.m. It will follow Order Five, Rule 2(2) of the House's Standing Orders.

The main goal of the meeting is to discuss the Appropriation (Repeal and Enactment) Act, 2025 (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill, 2026. This bill aims to extend the time allowed for the capital part of the 2025 budget by three more months.

“The purpose of the Emergency Sitting is to consider the Appropriation (REPEAL and Enactment) Act, 2025 (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill, 2026 to further extend the implementation of the Capital aspect of the Budget from 30th June to 30th September 2026,” the memo says.

If the House approves this extension, the deadline for completing capital projects under the budget will move from 30 June to 30 September 2026.

Mr Sidi mentioned that the extension will give more time to finish ongoing projects included in the budget. He asked lawmakers to treat this session as a priority.

This move follows the Senate's approval of a similar bill last Thursday. This sets the stage for the House to agree before sending it for the president's approval.

If approved, this extension would be the third time the capital component of the 2025 Appropriation Act has been adjusted.

Lawmakers first extended the implementation time in December 2025. They were worried that many capital projects would not finish before the original deadline. So they shifted the expiration date to 31 March 2026.

After that deadline passed, the National Assembly approved another extension, moving the deadline to 30 June 2026. This allowed ministries, departments, and agencies to keep working on ongoing projects.

The planned emergency meeting comes right after the House finished discussing several major legislative proposals. This includes a bill to create state police across Nigeria.

After passing the state police bill in the third reading, the House adjourned until 7 July. So Monday’s session is a special meeting to address the budget timeline.
