The House of Representatives approved a three-month extension for the capital part of the 2025 budget on Monday. The new deadline is now 30 September 2026, up from 30 June 2026.
This decision came during an emergency meeting held to discuss a bill aimed at extending the time for capital spending in the budget.
The bill is called “A Bill for an Act to Amend the Appropriation (Repeal and Enactment) Act, 2025 to Extend the Implementation of the Capital Aspect of the Appropriation Act, 2025 from 30 June 2026 to 30 September 2026.” It went through its first and second readings before the lawmakers took a closer look at it.
House Leader Julius Ihonvbere (APC, Edo) led the discussion. He said the change was needed to give more time for ongoing capital projects that are part of the 2025 budget.
After the debate, the House went into the Committee of Supply to examine the bill in detail. The committee then reported back to the main session, where the bill was approved for a third reading and passed.
Speaker Abbas Tajudeen announced the bill's passage after most members showed their support through a voice vote.
This approval follows a similar decision by the Senate just days earlier. This means both chambers have agreed on the bill, which will soon be sent to the president for approval.
This extension is the third time the National Assembly has pushed back the deadline for capital spending in the 2025 budget.
The first extension was in December 2025, allowing ministries and agencies more time to finish their ongoing projects. After that extension ended, another one was approved in March 2026, changing the deadline to 30 June 2026.
The latest extension will help the federal government continue funding and completing projects already included in the budget before the new deadline in September.
After finishing the bill discussion, the House adjourned until 7 July, following its legislative calendar, after briefly meeting for the emergency session.
