The federal government has sent its congratulations to Colombia’s President-elect, Abelardo Espriella, after his win in the presidential runoff election on 21 June 2026.
This congratulatory message came in a statement from the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, on Thursday in Abuja.
Mr Ebienfa said Nigeria appreciated the democratic choice made by the Colombian people. He expressed hope for a close working relationship with the new government, which will take office on 7 August.
He noted that Nigeria and Colombia share a commitment to democracy, peace, and sustainable development.
“The Government of Nigeria reaffirms its readiness to strengthen the existing friendship and cooperation between our two countries in areas of mutual interest, including trade, investment, security, and South-South cooperation.
“We wish President-elect Espriella every success in his responsibilities and in his efforts to improve the lives of the Colombian people,” he added.
Mr Ebienfa emphasized that Nigeria is dedicated to enhancing bilateral relations with Colombia for the benefit of both nations.
Mr Espriella won the presidential runoff with 49.66 percent of the votes, beating his opponent, Iván Cepeda, who received 48.70 percent.
