Rita Nwadike Supports Falcons in Their Quest for 11th WAFCON Title

Former Super Falcons striker Rita Nwadike has shown her support for Nigeria's women’s national team as they aim to win the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title again. The team has won the title 10 times, and Nwadike believes they can extend their success, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.

Nwadike spoke about the quality and experience of the current squad. She believes the team has what it takes to secure an 11th WAFCON title.

She advised the players to approach each match with determination and discipline. Nwadike reminded them that a winning mentality has been a hallmark of the Nigerian women's team for many years.

“The Super Falcons remain the biggest team in women’s football in Africa. They have quality players, experienced professionals and a good technical crew. I believe they can successfully defend the title if they stay focused and play as a team,” she said during the MTN Super Falcons Show.

Nwadike also encouraged Nigerians to support the team during the tournament. She emphasized that the players need the nation’s prayers and backing as they go after another continental title.

“Representing Nigeria comes with great responsibility, but I know these girls understand what is at stake. They should believe in themselves, give everything on the pitch and make the country proud. Nigerians should continue to support and encourage them,” she added.

Rita Nwadike made history by scoring Nigeria’s first-ever FIFA Women’s World Cup goal in a 3-3 draw against Canada at the 1995 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Sweden. She mentioned that wearing the green and white jersey is one of the greatest honors for any player.

Nwadike believes the current squad has a chance to strengthen their legacy by defending their title. She wants them to inspire the next generation of female footballers in Nigeria.

As defending champions, Nigeria enters WAFCON 2026 with the record of being the most successful nation in the tournament’s history.

The Falcons are in Group C, where they will play against Malawi, Zambia, and Egypt. They will start their title defense against Malawi on Tuesday, July 28. Their next match will be against Zambia on Saturday, August 1, and they will close the group stage with Egypt on August 5.

This year’s tournament will also act as the African qualifiers for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. The four teams that reach the semi-finals will qualify automatically, while one more team will get a chance through intercontinental play-offs.
