Just a week after losing the Nigeria Premier Football League title to Rangers International, Rivers United got their revenge with a thrilling 3-2 win in the Round of 32 of the President Federation Cup, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
The match at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo was intense. Rivers United jumped to a two-goal lead in the first half. Rangers fought hard and managed to equalize.
But Rivers United had the last word. Handsome Surveyor scored a late header to secure their spot in the next round.
Still feeling the sting from losing the NPFL title by just one point, Rivers United wasted no time. Former league top scorer Chijioke Mbaoma headed in the first goal.
In the 33rd minute, Finidi George’s team doubled their lead with a goal from Wisdom Samuel. They went into halftime with a comfortable two-goal cushion.
After the break, Rangers came back strong. Godwin Obaje scored from the penalty spot on the hour mark, cutting the lead. Just two minutes later, Precious Agu leveled the game.
Rivers United's Surveyor, who came off the bench for Ubong Friday, turned the match around. He scored in stoppage time to secure the win and keep their dreams of silverware alive this season.
For Rangers International, this loss ends their chance of a domestic double. Coach Fidelis Ilechukwu and his team will now take a break before they prepare for the CAF Champions League preliminaries next season.
