Cristiano Ronaldo has spoken out about his controversial exit from the Portugal national team camp. He claims that head coach Jorge Jesus broke promises made to him on two occasions.
The 41-year-old Portugal captain shared his side of the story in a long statement on Instagram on Tuesday. He wanted to clear the air about his decision to leave the squad and stop the rumors.
Ronaldo said he was planning to end his international career after the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He even wrote a farewell letter to the Portuguese people.
But Pedro Proença, the president of the Portugal Football Federation, convinced him to think again. Ronaldo also supported the choice of Jesus as the new head coach.
“I told the President of the Federation that, in my opinion, it would be the right choice,” Ronaldo wrote.
“On the day the current head coach was presented, I was genuinely happy with the choice. It was the right option, as the results are confirming.”
Ronaldo says Jesus had a clear plan
Ronaldo said that his relationship with Jesus started off well. The coach explained how he planned to manage Ronaldo's role in the national team.
Jesus assured Ronaldo that he was a key part of his plans. He said Ronaldo would play in both the first and last matches of the international window.
“He told me he was counting on me and that my presence was fundamental to his project,” Ronaldo said.
“He presented me, right there, with a plan for my participation. He told me I would play the first match and the last one, and that for reasons of physical management he would always make three to four changes per match.”
Ronaldo also mentioned there was a suggestion for him to stay in Portugal instead of traveling for matches against Norway and Denmark.
He rejected that idea immediately, saying it would send the wrong message to stay behind while still being captain.
“I refused this proposal immediately. It seemed obvious to me that I could not accept it,” he wrote.
“It was not because I would not play the matches abroad that I would stop captaining our team. That privilege of staying in Portugal would not be a good example.”
Ronaldo claims Jesus changed the plan
Ronaldo explained that he played against Wales and accepted being substituted, giving the captain's armband to Bruno Fernandes without any problems.
But things took a different turn when Portugal faced Norway. Ronaldo said Jesus unexpectedly asked if he could play for 30 minutes, even though they had agreed he would play against Denmark.
“To my absolute surprise, the coach asked me if I was fit to play 30 minutes. I was fully focused on my physical recovery,” Ronaldo wrote.
“Without any problem. This request was something outside my physical recovery and training plan, because I was only going to play on the 4th at the Dragão, but of course I said yes. He replied that I should then be ready because I would play 30 minutes.”
Ronaldo said he warmed up from half-time but was never called to play, making him feel that Jesus had broken his promise.
“The rest everyone knows. I warmed up from half-time, watched the minutes go by, and was not called. The coach had broken his word to me.”
Ronaldo apologizes for his reaction
The Portugal captain also discussed why he did not greet fans after the match. He admitted that his reaction was not right.
He apologized to Portuguese fans and took full responsibility for his actions.
“I apologize to the Portuguese public for not having greeted them at the end of the game. It was a failure that is only my responsibility,” he said.
Ronaldo revealed that a private meeting took place with Jesus and Al Nassr sporting director Simão Coutinho after the match.
He said they agreed that Jesus would clarify what happened in his next press conference.
However, Ronaldo claimed that Jesus' press conference did not reflect what they had agreed on.
“It was the second time that he was breaking the word he had given me,” Ronaldo said.
“I decided to leave the camp without waiting for any further breach of word. For me, the truth is still the most important thing in relationships between people.”
Ronaldo accepts his punishment
Despite his criticism of Jesus, Ronaldo said he knows his decision to leave the team camp should have consequences.
He apologized to his teammates and the Portuguese public, saying the federation has the right to punish him.
Ronaldo made it clear he does not expect special treatment because of his status or long service to the national team.
He said the rules should apply to everyone.
“The rules are equal for everyone,” Ronaldo stressed, while accepting that the federation should punish his walkout without any excuses.
But he insisted that he still wants to represent his country.
Ronaldo rejected the idea that his future appearances should just be farewell matches.
“When I think about the national team, what I really think about is competing,” he wrote.
“Therefore, if I am physically well, playing at my club, scoring goals I hope, after serving the suspension that is applied to me, I will be available, as I always have been until today, to compete and win for our National Team.”
He ended his statement with a strong declaration of his intentions.
“This is, believe me, the purest of truths.”
