Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, have praised the Senate for passing the Constitution Alteration Bill to create state police in Nigeria.

The governors see this as an important change that will boost the country’s security and enhance community policing.

Sanwo-Olu took to his X handle on Wednesday to also thank President Bola Tinubu for pushing this reform.

He wrote, “I commend the Senate for passing the constitutional amendment bill to establish state police across Nigeria. This is a bold and necessary response to a long-standing national conversation on how we protect our communities.”

The Lagos governor also recognized President Bola Tinubu for his vision on state police, and he believes this is an important security reform.

“My appreciation also goes to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This reform is a direct result of his leadership and commitment to changing our security system. He has championed this cause since his days as Governor of Lagos State, knowing that a safer Nigeria requires empowering authorities who actually know their terrain,” he said.

He added that the bill's passage gives Lagos a chance to create a policing system that fits its specific security needs.

“For us in Lagos, our security needs are unique, dynamic and constantly evolving. We know our streets and our neighborhoods better than anyone else. This progress finally gives us the opportunity to build a system that is fully responsive to our local realities. There is still work to be done but this is major progress toward a safer Nigeria,” he stated.

In the same way, Abiodun, in a post on X, thanked Tinubu for bringing the Executive Bill on state police and praised the Senate for backing the effort.

He wrote, “We commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership in presenting the Executive Bill on State Police, which has now been passed by the Senate.

“The passage of this important legislation marks a significant step toward strengthening Nigeria’s security by bringing policing closer to the people and allowing states to play a more active role in maintaining law and order.”

He is confident that state police will boost intelligence gathering and improve security nationwide.

“We also applaud the Senate for its support of this reform and remain confident that State Police will enhance community security, improve intelligence gathering, and contribute to a safer and more prosperous Nigeria,” he said.

The Senate passed the Constitution Alteration Bill on Wednesday, aiming to establish state police across the country after over two-thirds of lawmakers voted in favor during plenary.

The proposed law aims to set up a state policing framework that will work alongside the current federal police system as part of efforts to tackle insecurity through decentralized policing.
