Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has confirmed that the state is ready to host the first National Intermediate Games. The Main Organising Committee (MOC) of the event checked facilities around the state on Wednesday, as reported by The PUNCH.

The National Intermediate Games was set up by the National Sports Commission. It aims to help young athletes move from grassroots to elite sports. The first edition is set to hold in September.

The inspection team was led by Bukola Olopade, the Director-General of the National Sports Commission. He expressed happiness with how prepared the state is for the event.

During the visit, the committee looked at ongoing work at Teslim Balogun Stadium. The stadium is getting major upgrades, including a new playing surface and better infrastructure.

Contractors on the project assured the commission that everything is on track. They confirmed that the stadium will be ready by September 2026.

The team also checked the indoor sports hall, basketball facilities, and other venues that will host different events during the Games.

Governor Sanwo-Olu recently approved the Local Organising Committee for the competition. This committee will ensure a world-class event. He emphasized Lagos State's history of hosting big sporting events and supporting young athletes.

"We will host the Games excellently because it reflects the wishes of Nigerians and our dedication to youth and sports development. We will do it in a way that will impress everyone involved in sports across the country," Sanwo-Olu said.

"The leadership of the National Sports Commission has put Nigerian sports on a good path. The team is focused, determined, and committed to achieving results. The smooth working relationship between the Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and the Director-General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, is commendable and inspiring.

"We are proud of what they are building, and their vision matches our own goals for sports development.

"Sports does not happen by chance; it requires careful planning, intentional investment, and consistent effort. What the Commission is doing now shows that Nigerian sports is heading in the right direction."

Olopade also praised the Lagos State Government for its efforts and commitment to making the competition successful.

"Lagos has shown its readiness for the Games. It is special that the first National Sports Festival took place in Lagos, and now the first National Intermediate Games will also be here.

"The state’s history speaks volumes. Last year, Lagos became the first African city to host the E1 Powerboat World Championship and recently brought the Davis Cup back for the first time in almost 20 years.

"Lagos has displayed a strong commitment to hosting the National Intermediate Games. What we saw during the inspection gives us confidence that the state is ready to deliver a top-quality competition.

"The National Intermediate Games is key to our athlete development plan. It connects youth sports with elite competition, creating a steady path for discovering and nurturing talent.

"We are pleased with the level of cooperation we have received from Lagos State and all involved parties."
