SDP Candidate Unveils Plans to Tackle Poverty and Insecurity

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate, Adewole Adebayo, on Tuesday shared a detailed policy plan aimed at changing the conversation in Nigeria toward idea-driven governance and reforms.

Mr Adebayo, a professor, presented the Presidential Blueprint titled ‘Farewell to Poverty and Insecurity’ in Abuja. He spoke about the serious economic and security issues facing the country.

He argued that Nigeria's problems are not due to natural causes but are a result of past leadership mistakes.

Mr Adebayo believes a focused administration can achieve significant results in four years. He compared this timeframe to completing a university degree.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the new blueprint focuses on human development, boosting economic productivity, and improving local infrastructure.

According to him, the plan aims to generate 75,000 megawatts of electricity, set up four functioning public refineries, and establish 36 modular refineries. It also seeks to stabilize the national currency through improved productivity and job creation.

Mr Adebayo framed this policy document as an invitation to shift away from ethnic politics toward a future based on accountability and strong leadership. He urged Nigerians to consider these ideas ahead of the 2027 elections.

Supporting Mr Adebayo's points, the party’s National Chairman, Yusuf Dantalle, emphasized that governance should go beyond just administration to real problem-solving.

"Without security, there can be no meaningful production; without production, there can be no sustainable prosperity," the chairman noted, highlighting the party’s core philosophy.

Mr Dantalle stressed the party’s commitment to execution and strict monitoring. He said the framework will depend on performance contracts, regular public reviews, and strong accountability measures.

"What our people are now demanding is delivery. They want to know what the government has promised, what the government has done, what is still pending, and who is responsible," he added.

The party’s vice presidential candidate, Usman Bugaje, also spoke. He pointed out that while Nigerian professionals excel in other countries, Nigeria falls behind its neighbors in key development areas like energy production.

Mr Bugaje mentioned that with Nigeria's population expected to reach about 400 million in the next 25 years, strong leadership is needed to prepare Nigeria for a leading position in the global economy.

On agriculture, he highlighted what he called serious structural weaknesses compared to international standards.

"Nigeria’s productivity is still between five to six metric tonnes per hectare," he said. This is low compared to the African average of around 20 metric tonnes and Rwanda’s significant recovery after the genocide.

Mr Bugaje said the blueprint provides practical solutions, especially focusing on energy costs that increase expenses in transportation and agriculture, which are crucial for national growth.

He acknowledged that entrenched political interests might resist changes, but he assured that the party is ready to tackle systemic corruption and fulfill its promises.

"We are not underestimating the difficulties that are going to be there," he said. He assured, however, that the party will "fight, win and deliver."
