The faction of the Social Democratic Party that supports its National Chairman, Shehu Gabam, has denied any connection to a lawsuit against the Independent National Electoral Commission’s timetable. They called the lawsuit unauthorized and not approved by the party's leadership.

In a statement released on Wednesday in Abuja, the party explained that the lawsuit was filed without their approval. It was initiated by the former National Secretary, Dr Olu Agunloye.

The faction stated that Agunloye did not have the authority to take legal action for the party. They insisted that the lawsuit does not represent the views of any recognized group within the party's structure.

The party noted that the National Working Committee (NWC), the National Executive Committee (NEC), or any other decision-making body did not approve the legal action.

“The lawsuit was neither discussed nor approved by the appropriate organs of the party. It was a unilateral action taken without the knowledge, consent, or authorization of the SDP,” the statement said in part.

The faction made it clear that they are fully disassociating from the case marked FHC/ABJ/CS/720/2026, along with any related filings or representations.

They also mentioned a letter from Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Shaibu Enejo Aruwa. This letter talked about communications that were said to have happened with Agunloye concerning the lawsuit against INEC and others.

The SDP affirmed that they never authorized the legal action. They added that any such action must follow proper procedures and get internal approval.

The party urged the public, political figures, and institutions to ignore any claim that the lawsuit reflects their official stance.

This situation arises as political activities increase in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections, with parties stepping up their internal preparations and legal strategies.
