The Social Democratic Party wants to free and rebuild Nigeria from its current problems with the economy and security if they win the 2027 general elections.
The National Chairman of the SDP, Prof Sadiq Gombe, made this promise on Friday. He spoke while welcoming a group from the Confederation of West Africa Youth at the party’s headquarters in Abuja.
Gombe was represented by the party’s Deputy National Chairman, Senator Ugochukwu Uba. He said the party's beliefs are based on Chapter II of the 1999 Constitution, which focuses on the welfare and security of Nigerians.
He mentioned that more young Nigerians are showing interest in the SDP. This shows that the party’s message is reaching people. He added that Nigeria has reached a point where it needs serious rebuilding.
“The SDP is a party with a clear ideology. This ideology is based on Chapter 2 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which talks about providing for the welfare and security of Nigerians. That is what shapes the policies of this party.
“I find it interesting that many Nigerian youths are interested in the party. It means our message is getting through to the people. This country has derailed to a situation where we need to rebuild. If you look at our message and the manifesto we released last week, you will see a solid plan for transforming this country.
“We cannot keep drifting. The SDP wants to get this country back on track. Luckily, we have a presidential candidate who knows what he is doing, is determined, young, and ready to make changes. We want to do something different that will lead to the liberation of this country if we come to power.”
Also speaking, the SDP presidential candidate, Prince Adewole Adebayo, told members and supporters to focus on grassroots work before the 2027 elections.
Adebayo said political influence really starts at the community level. He emphasized that being visible nationally or being a good speaker will not bring votes without connecting with voters at the polling unit.
He said, “Politics happens in the neighborhoods. We have 176,846 polling units across the country. Any skill in English you have that does not persuade your neighbor about how they should vote is wasted.
“Any influence you have from Timbuktu to Accra that cannot change people’s votes in your hometown is useless. So we must go back.
“Politics is not just about talk. It’s about feeling because the burden of politics is heavy. It is the love of your country and the vision for the future that will help you last in politics.”
The Regional President of the Confederation of West Africa Youth, Israel Akinola, also spoke during the visit. He said Nigerians need to aim for a new political path before the 2027 elections.
Akinola said public and private sectors must work together through partnerships to promote development.
He also criticized Nigerians for celebrating governments for providing basic services, which he said are rights of the citizens.
