Senate President Godswill Akpabio is getting support for his re-election as leader of the 11th National Assembly. Senate Chief Whip Tahir Monguno and Senator Cyril Fasuyi both stated that there is "no vacancy" for the position.
The lawmakers shared their views during the plenary session on Thursday. They are confident that Akpabio will keep his seat when the next National Assembly starts in 2027.
Monguno, who is from Borno North Senatorial District, said he believes most current senators will return. He thinks Akpabio will continue as Senate President.
"Insha Allah, by the grace of God, the majority of us are going to make it back to the Senate, and this seat is hereby declared: there is no vacancy," Monguno said. He also mentioned that this declaration includes the Deputy Senate President and other key Senate positions.
Fasuyi, representing Ekiti North Senatorial District, also supported Akpabio’s ambition for a second term. He said the Senate presidency for the next Assembly is already filled.
"I hereby support the motion ably moved by Senator Monguno that the seat of the Senate President in the 11th Assembly is not open to any contest. It is already occupied by Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio," Fasuyi said.
After these declarations, Akpabio asked the senators if this showed the general opinion of the chamber. When he asked those in support to say "aye," the response was clear throughout the chamber.
But when he asked for any opposing voices, there was no response.
"I think that settles it," Akpabio said.
This exchange showed public support for Akpabio’s return. But it does not mean there is a formal vote for the leadership of the 11th National Assembly.
The future leadership of the Senate will depend on the results of the elections for presiding officers when the 11th National Assembly begins after the 2027 elections.
