Former Manchester United coach Sir Alex Ferguson has shared his experience recovering from a brain haemorrhage. He talked about the fear he felt after emergency surgery in 2018.

Ferguson had the haemorrhage in May 2018. He returned to Old Trafford four months later to watch Manchester United play against Wolves in the Premier League.

Even after 26 years with the club and being one of football's most successful managers, Ferguson said he felt nervous about going back to the stadium.

According to BBC Sport, Ferguson said, “I wish I could say I was comfortable. I wasn’t.”

Ferguson was with his wife, Cathy, when they received a warm welcome from fans as they took their seats in the directors’ box.

“My wife was with me, and she was nearly crying. When we sat down, she said ‘that’s fantastic’,” he remembered.

At the time of the haemorrhage, Ferguson was 76 years old. He had already retired from management five years earlier. He slowly got better, but the early days were tough.

“I had lost my voice; I couldn’t speak,” he said. “That was a frightening moment.”

He shared how his grandsons visited him during his recovery and saw him struggling to communicate.

“I remember my grandsons coming to see me and I had lost my voice,” Ferguson said.

A therapist helped him start speaking again with various exercises.

“Then they brought in a therapist and she started doing things like asking me to write down the names of birds, names of animals, names of rivers,” he explained.

“That way my voice came back.”

Now that he is nearing his 85th birthday, Ferguson feels well, even though he has some minor injuries.

The Scot has also looked back on his amazing football career in his new book, _Games of My Life_. The book talks about 21 key matches from his playing and coaching days.

Ferguson managed Manchester United for 26 years, winning 38 trophies and becoming one of the most celebrated managers in football history.

His stories give a personal look into his great career and the tough time after facing one of the biggest health challenges of his life.
