Soldiers fend off late-night attack in Borno

Soldiers have fought off an overnight attack by suspected members of Boko Haram or Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in northeast Nigeria. The attack took place at a military base in Gajiram, which is the headquarters of Nganzai Local Government Area in Borno State.

Sahara Reporters revealed that the attack happened around 1 a.m. on Monday. The insurgents came in large numbers, trying to take over the Forward Operating Base (FOB).

In voice notes shared with the newspaper, soldiers at the base reported that they successfully repelled the attackers. They claimed to have killed several insurgents during the battle.

But the soldiers also mentioned that many of their personnel were injured in the fight. They called for immediate evacuation for medical treatment.

The attackers were said to have set fire to some operational vehicles, ammunition, and other military equipment during the assault.

The troops requested urgent reinforcements, more ammunition, and logistics support from military authorities.

Despite the fierce attack, the soldiers remained at the base throughout the confrontation. They showed determination in the face of danger.

As of now, the Nigerian Army has not officially confirmed the attack. They also have not verified the number of casualties or the soldiers' claims about the insurgents being killed.

Army spokesperson, Colonel Onyechi Anele, has not responded to inquiries sent to her.
