Sporting Lagos head coach, Jeffrey Buter, has been called by the Nigeria Premier Football League after his comments on match officiating. This follows his team's goalless draw against Ikorodu City.
Buter is set to appear before the NPFL disciplinary panel this week. He spoke out about the refereeing standards in the league.
After the Lagos derby, the coach raised concerns about how the matches are officiated. He said referees, not coaches, are damaging the league’s reputation.
“They say I am bringing the league into disrepute. The referees are bringing the league to disrepute and not me. If they are not going to fix it, the league is not going anywhere,” he stated.
Buter also mentioned that Sporting Lagos has faced poor officiating in recent games. He has received disciplinary warnings for his comments.
His remarks have now caught the attention of the league, leading to the invitation for him to meet with disciplinary authorities.
The NPFL has cautioned coaches and club officials against making public comments that could undermine the credibility of referees or damage the league’s image. They insist that complaints about officiating should follow official channels, not public criticism.
Buter’s upcoming hearing will decide if he will face any disciplinary measures for his statements.
Sporting Lagos remains unbeaten in the league as they wait for the date of their coach’s hearing with the NPFL panel.
This situation could heat up discussions about officiating and the relationship between coaches and referees in the league this season.
