The Super Eagles have faced a tough blow in the recent FIFA Men’s World Ranking. They have dropped four spots to 30th in the world after a disappointing performance in the September international window.
Nigeria, who was in 26th place last month, paid the price for their mixed results in the first matches of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
The three-time African champions started the qualifying series with a 2-1 win against Madagascar in Uyo. But just days later, Guinea-Bissau handed them a heavy defeat of 3-0.
These contrasting results have caused Nigeria to fall four spots globally. Their standing in Africa has also taken a significant hit.
The Super Eagles have dropped from third to sixth place in Africa. Morocco has held on to the top spot as the highest-ranked team on the continent.
Morocco leads the African rankings, followed by Senegal, Egypt, Algeria, and Côte d’Ivoire. Nigeria is now at the bottom of the top six in Africa.
The latest rankings show how quickly positions can change after competitive matches. The 2027 AFCON qualifiers carry more weight than friendly matches, impacting the rankings significantly.
Nigeria’s fall also highlights the impact of the defeat in Bissau, where the Super Eagles conceded three goals without scoring any after their narrow win over Madagascar.
This left Eric Chelle’s side with just three points from their first two qualifying matches. It serves as a reminder of how important consistency is in the qualification campaign.
For the Super Eagles, this latest ranking is another setback after a good start under Chelle. Nigeria will need better results in their upcoming competitive matches to stop the decline and start climbing up both the FIFA world ranking and the African standings.
