Super Eagles striker, Akor Adams, says Nigeria wants to be the best team in Africa, and this journey must start with the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Adams shared this in an interview with Pooja Media posted on Thursday. This comes ahead of the Super Eagles' upcoming qualifying matches.
He mentioned that the two matches are crucial as they will shape what the team aims to achieve.
"It’s very important because I think it sets the mark for what we want to do. If we want to be the best team in Africa, it starts from the qualification, like the coach has clearly said. And that is what we aim to achieve as well," Adams said.
Head coach, Éric Chelle, has recently announced his squad for the AFCON qualifiers and a friendly match against Russia. Some new players have received their first call-ups to the national team.
Adams welcomed these new players, saying that competition for spots will help make the Super Eagles stronger.
"It’s always good to see that we have players who are also doing well and who can get the chance to be in the team. Whatever makes us better, that’s the goal.
"The coach makes it very clear that if any player that comes here clearly deserves it, and we’re happy to welcome them as well," he said.
The striker, who is back with the squad for the international break, called his return a privilege and said the players are excited to be together again.
"It feels good, feels good. It’s also a privilege to be back with the group, and yeah, we’re happy to be back," Adams said.
Adams also asked fans to stay positive and support the team during the qualifiers.
"Be optimistic, come out in good support and in good faith in the team, because we know you guys support us. And we’ll try to give our best on the pitch," he added.
The Super Eagles are aiming for qualification for the 2027 AFCON as they kick off their campaign under Chelle.
