Nigeria got good news about injuries before their upcoming matches for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau. Coventry City midfielder Frank Onyeka is back in the Super Eagles squad, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
Onyeka played again during Coventry’s 3-1 loss to Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night. He came on as a substitute in the 73rd minute for Caleb Yirenkyi.
The 28-year-old midfielder was earlier considered doubtful for the AFCON qualifiers and a friendly match against Russia. He had a hand injury from the second half of Coventry’s 5-0 loss to Brighton and Hove Albion the previous weekend. He seemed to get hurt after colliding with a Brighton player.
But the injury turned out to be less serious than people thought. Manager Frank Lampard included the former FC Midtjylland midfielder in the matchday squad for Aston Villa's visit.
Although he did not start the match, his 17-minute appearance from the bench, where he received a yellow card, showed he is fit and ready to play for the Super Eagles.
The Super Eagles will kick off their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign this month. They will host Madagascar on September 25 and then travel to face Guinea-Bissau on September 29.
Chelle announced his final squad on Thursday.
