Nigerian footballers had a busy weekend in Europe. Many Super Eagles stars made big impacts for their clubs in different leagues.
Victor Osimhen and Gift Orban were the top Nigerian players in Turkey, both scoring goals. Orban also provided an assist in Amedspor’s big win over Eyüpspor. Osimhen celebrated the birth of his second daughter with a goal for Galatasaray.
In Germany, Raphael Onyedika and Terem Moffi scored as Eintracht Frankfurt beat Hamburger SV. Tolu Arokodare continued to score in the Netherlands. Taiwo Awoniyi got his first Premier League goal of the season in Coventry City’s win against Sunderland.
Other players like Friday Etim, Samuel Adeniran, Umar Sadiq, and Josh Maja also contributed well. Kelechi Iheanacho, however, saw his impressive run of scoring in 12 straight league matches come to an end.
TURKEY
Victor Osimhen (Galatasaray)
Osimhen had another great game for Galatasaray, scoring in their strong 4-0 away win against Konyaspor in the Turkish Süper Lig.
The Nigerian striker opened the scoring with a powerful header from a free-kick in the 12th minute. This goal helped Galatasaray start the match on a high note.
This goal was special for the 27-year-old. He had just welcomed his second daughter, Liora Audrey, with his partner, Stefanie Kim Ladewig, just before the match. Osimhen stayed in Istanbul for the birth and traveled to Konya on matchday.
He was substituted after an hour, bringing his league total to nine goals and three assists in eight matches. He has scored four times in his last three games.
Gift Orban (Amedspor)
Orban was one of the standout Nigerian players of the weekend. He scored a goal and made an assist as Amedspor beat Eyüpspor 5-1.
The forward scored in the 35th minute, finishing well after being set up by Rayan Lutin. Seven minutes later, he assisted Samuel Ballet for Amedspor’s third goal.
Orban was substituted in the 78th minute for Mohamed Khalil. The 24-year-old, on loan from Hoffenheim, has now scored nine league goals and made four assists this season.
This performance puts him level with Osimhen at the top of the Süper Lig scoring chart.
Paul Onuachu and Chibuike Nwaiwu (Trabzonspor)
Trabzonspor won their fifth straight league match with a 2-0 victory over Gaziantep FK. Both Nigerian players played significant roles in the win.
Nwaiwu helped the team with a strong defensive performance, securing a clean sheet. He has played in every league match this season.
Onuachu returned to the starting line-up after missing three matches due to a muscle injury from the Conference League match against KuPS on October 15. He did not score and was replaced by Umut Nayir in the 63rd minute.
Onuachu has scored twice this season, with both goals against Gençlerbirliği in September.
Kelechi Iheanacho (Bursaspor)
Iheanacho’s scoring streak ended as Bursaspor won 3-0 against Bandırmaspor in the Turkish 1. Lig.
The former Leicester City forward played the full match but could not score, ending his 12-match scoring run.
Halil Akbunar scored first in the seventh minute, followed by Lewis Baker’s two goals in the 12th and 23rd minutes.
Iheanacho's Nigerian teammate, Olanrewaju Kehinde, started for Bandırmaspor but was booked early and substituted in the 59th minute. Despite not scoring, Iheanacho is still the league's top scorer with 16 goals and three assists. Bursaspor is currently at the top of the table with 31 points.
Chidozie Awaziem played the full match for Konyaspor in their loss to Galatasaray.
GERMANY
Raphael Onyedika (Eintracht Frankfurt)
Onyedika reached an important milestone by scoring his first goal for Eintracht Frankfurt since joining from Club Brugge this summer.
He scored in the 47th minute as Frankfurt beat Hamburger SV 3-1, putting his team back in front after Terem Moffi had equalized.
Frankfurt took the lead in the 10th minute when Warmed Omari scored an own goal. Moffi quickly equalized in the 14th minute after a pass from Albert Grønbæk.
Onyedika scored when he reacted quickly after goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes saved a corner. Younes Ebnoutalib scored the third goal in the 69th minute to secure the win.
Terem Moffi (Hamburger SV)
Moffi continued his good start at Hamburg, scoring against his former Club Brugge teammate’s new team.
He scored in the 14th minute after receiving a pass from Albert Grønbæk, leveling the game after Omari’s own goal.
Though his goal did not prevent the loss, it was another good contribution from the Nigerian striker, who also scored in the DFB-Pokal match against Frankfurt on October 27.
NETHERLANDS
Tolu Arokodare (Ajax)
Arokodare kept up his scoring streak, netting the only goal in Ajax's 1-0 win over AZ Alkmaar.
The Nigerian striker scored with a header in the ninth minute from Abdellah Ouazane’s cross, giving Ajax an early lead.
Ajax faced pressure from AZ, especially late in the match. Goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen made a crucial save to deny Mexx Meerdink.
This win ended Ajax’s long winless run against AZ and moved them to second place, just one point behind the league leaders Feyenoord. Arokodare has scored in three straight matches.
ENGLAND
Taiwo Awoniyi (Coventry City)
Awoniyi ended his goal drought in the Premier League by scoring in Coventry City's 3-1 win against Sunderland.
He scored in the 37th minute after stealing the ball from Luke O’Nien and finishing calmly past goalkeeper Robin Roefs.
Tatsuhiro Sakamoto opened the scoring in the 17th minute, and Jack Rudoni added another shortly after half-time. Sunderland pulled one back with a penalty from Enzo Le Fée in the 67th minute, and Omar Alderete was sent off in the 99th minute.
Awoniyi was substituted in the 72nd minute after making a big impact on the victory. This was his first Premier League goal of the season, having previously scored once in the EFL Cup.
The weekend’s biggest Nigerian stories
Osimhen and Orban were the star players in Turkey, with both reaching nine league goals. Onyedika and Moffi also shone in Germany. Arokodare and Awoniyi made important contributions with their goals.
Maja kept his good form in France despite Le Havre losing heavily. Sadiq scored the winner for Valencia after returning from injury.
For Iheanacho, the weekend marked the end of a great personal run. His 12-match scoring streak may have stopped, but his 16 league goals and three assists are still impressive as Bursaspor pushes for the top in the Turkish second tier.
