Nigerian players Nathan Tella and Chidera Ejuke scored amazing goals to help their teams, Bayer Leverkusen and Sevilla, win big on Saturday.
Tella came off the bench and scored his first goal of the season as Leverkusen defeated Wehen Wiesbaden 4-0 in the first round of the DFB Pokal. The Super Eagles winger entered the game in the 65th minute and found the net just four minutes later, making it 3-0 for his team. Christian Kofane added another goal 10 minutes later.
Before Tella's goal, Patrik Schick opened the scoring for Leverkusen in the 43rd minute. Lucas Vazquez then doubled the lead just two minutes into the second half.
Another Nigerian player, Victor Boniface, did not play in this match as he remained on the bench.
Leverkusen will now focus on the Bundesliga. Their league campaign starts away to Elversberg on Saturday, August 29.
In Spain, Ejuke made a strong return to Sevilla with a stunning chip over Spain's Unai Simón. Sevilla won 3-1 against 10-man Athletic Club at San Mamés. This win puts Sevilla at the top of LaLiga, with six points from two games.
The 28-year-old winger nearly left for Belgian club Anderlecht just days before this match. He was not included in the final part of Sevilla's pre-season tour due to wage talks.
But when those talks fell through and Sevilla could not sign Real Zaragoza’s Adrian Liso, they brought Ejuke back into the team.
Athletic Club went down to 10 men in the 11th minute when Yuri Berchiche was sent off for a foul on Miguel Sierra. Oso took advantage and scored four minutes later to put Sevilla in the lead.
Ejuke came on at half-time and scored the second goal in the 50th minute. Isaac Romero added a third goal for Sevilla. Aitor Paredes scored a late goal for Athletic Club, but it was just a consolation.
