Actress and filmmaker Temitope Solaja, known as Star Girl, has said that being popular does not mean someone is talented. She emphasized that professionalism, hard work, and consistency are key to having a successful career in the film industry.

In an interview with Saturday Beats, Solaja explained that talent and popularity have different roles in the industry. She said, “I think both talent and popularity play a role in today’s industry, but they serve different purposes. Popularity can create opportunities and make it easier for someone to attract attention to a project, while talent and professionalism are what can help sustain a career over time.”

She added, “The industry has changed, and audiences now have access to actors through social media even before they see their work on screen. So naturally, visibility has become part of the business.”

But she warned against thinking that popularity means talent. She pointed out that many talented people still struggle to get noticed. “However, I don’t believe being popular automatically makes someone talented, just as being talented doesn’t always mean someone is highly visible. Ideally, I would like to see an industry where talent, hard work, professionalism, and visibility can coexist. At the end of the day, longevity is built on what you consistently bring to the table,” she said.

Solaja also talked about her return to Nollywood after taking a break from acting. She admitted that getting back into the industry has been challenging. “It hasn’t been easy, but it has been a very meaningful journey. Taking a break for several years meant that I had to reintroduce myself to an industry that had evolved while I was away. Nollywood has changed tremendously, especially with the growth of digital platforms and social media.”

“Coming back, I knew I couldn’t expect things to be exactly the way they were when I left. I had to reconnect, rebuild relationships, understand the new dynamics, and, most importantly, remind myself why I started in the first place. I returned with a lot more maturity, experience, and clarity about the kind of stories I want to tell,” she said.

The actress also shared about her film ‘Ofon’, which she produced. She said the film was inspired by her wish to tell a story that emotionally connects with people while leaving them with a meaningful message.

She said, “Ofon was inspired by my desire to tell a story that connects with people emotionally while also giving the audience something meaningful to take away. I have always believed that film should entertain, but it can also make people think, question certain situations, and see life from another perspective.”
