Three people have been arrested after a woman's dead body was found in Pankshin Local Government Area of Plateau State. The council chairman, Felix Gonung, confirmed this news.
The suspects have been moved to the police headquarters in Jos. Investigators reportedly found items believed to be fetish materials with them, according to Mr Gonung.
These arrests come as worries grow over two bodies found in Pankshin in just one month. Reports say vital organs may have been removed from the victims.
While speaking to journalists in Pankshin on Friday, Mr Gonung said the three suspects were taken in after the woman’s body was discovered last month. He also mentioned that security agencies are looking into the death of a young man found at Monday Market on 6 October.
The details around these two deaths are still unclear. It is not known if the cases are related. Mr Gonung suggested that the young man’s death might be connected to cult activities among students or criminal groups within the student community. He did not provide any proof to support this connection.
The chairman promised to work closely with security agencies to tackle these incidents and stop further deaths.
"I swore an oath to protect the lives and property of my people. But the government’s security plans are confidential. Soon, the public will see their results and impact," he said.
Mr Gonung added, "This administration, together with security agencies, is doing everything possible to restore and maintain peace in our communities."
As part of the planned security response, Mr Gonung mentioned that the council wants to introduce a policy. This policy would require landlords and hotel owners to provide details about their tenants and guests.
He explained that this measure aims to help identify criminals who might use rented places or hotels to commit crimes. "This will help us stop criminal groups who pretend to be students or guests while committing crimes in the community," he said.
Mr Gonung also pointed out that Pankshin has had relative peace, even with security issues in other parts of Plateau State. However, the recent events have made residents more worried.
He encouraged residents to stay alert and report any suspicious activities to the proper authorities.
