Trabzonspor has parted ways with head coach Fatih Tekke after he first submitted his resignation. This happened after the team was knocked out of the Europa League play-off round by Hungarian club Ferencvaros, losing 5-0 on aggregate.
After the loss, Tekke decided to resign. At first, Trabzonspor rejected his request. They believed he was acting out of strong emotions after the disappointing exit.
But on Wednesday, Trabzonspor announced they reached an agreement with Tekke to end their partnership. They said this was in line with the club’s long-term goals.
“Over his approximately 18-month tenure, Fatih Tekke brought significant value to Trabzonspor,” the club mentioned in their statement on Wednesday.
They praised Tekke for helping develop players, bringing in financial gains, and ending a long wait for the Turkish Cup.
“By bringing the Turkish Cup back to our museum, he once again wrote his name into Trabzonspor’s history,” the statement continued.
Trabzonspor said the decision came after talks with Tekke. He expressed he would never do anything that could hurt the club.
“At this point, we reached a mutual understanding with our coach, who stated he would never allow his presence to harm Trabzonspor in any way, that drawing a new roadmap, prioritising the club’s interests above all else, had become unavoidable,” the club explained.
Last season, Trabzonspor finished third in the Turkish Super Lig with Tekke as coach. This season, they will continue their European journey in the Europa Conference League. They will face Scottish club Hearts among other opponents.
Tekke’s departure marks the end of his approximately 18-month period in charge. During this time, he led Trabzonspor to a domestic cup win and a solid league performance.
