The Bayelsa State Police Command arrested Mr Ibobuminate Oweifa on Saturday. He is the son of the traditional ruler of Okodi community in Ogbia Local Government Area. He is accused of burning a man who was trying to steal firewood.

The victim is Godgift Biko. He suffered serious burns and is getting treatment at the emergency ward of the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa.

Commissioner of Police Iyamah Edebor confirmed the arrest in a phone interview on Sunday. He said the police acted quickly after they received the report.

Edebor stated that the Divisional Police Officer rescued Biko right away. The officer made sure he got first aid at a nearby clinic and then arrested Oweifa.

"The DPO immediately swung into action and arrested the suspect. Preliminary investigation has commenced and, upon conclusion, the suspect will be charged to court," the police commissioner said.

Edebor condemned violence and jungle justice. He said that actions that put human lives at risk will not be accepted.

During questioning, Oweifa said he caught Biko trying to steal his firewood. He claimed they argued, and this led to the incident that caused Biko's serious burns.

But police officials pointed out that Oweifa's story is just his side of things. They are still investigating to find out what really happened.

Oweifa is still in police custody. Investigations are ongoing, and he is expected to be taken to court after that.
