Tragedy as Worker Dies in Anambra Building Collapse

One person died on Tuesday when an old building partially fell in Otolo-Nnewi, Nnewi North Local Government Area, Anambra State.

The victim was named as Bakeru Iwal. He was in the building when part of it collapsed and trapped him.

This happened while they were demolishing the structure. The deceased was one of the workers on the demolition team.

Tochukwu Ikenga, the Anambra State Police spokesperson, confirmed the incident in a statement on Wednesday.

Mr Ikenga, a superintendent of police, said police officers from the Otolo Divisional Headquarters quickly responded after they got the news about the collapse.

He explained that the officers blocked off the area and started preliminary investigations. They found out that the victim, Mr Iwal, was 25 years old.

The victim was taken to the mortuary for preservation. This is pending an autopsy and other necessary checks.

“Preliminary information shows that the building was being demolished when a part of it suddenly fell, trapping one of the workers,” he said.

Mr Ikenga added that the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Nnanna Ama, has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident.

He said the police will look into the circumstances of the collapse and find out if anyone is responsible. Appropriate actions will follow based on what they discover.

“The Command asks the public to stay calm and let the investigation take its course. We will provide further updates as needed,” he said.
