A High Court in Anambra State, led by Justice Lauretta Oyeka, has sentenced a tricycle operator, Makua Ezike, to death by hanging. He was found guilty of killing Jude Onwuegbuchunam, a local from Umuoji in the Idemili North Local Government Area.

The charge sheet revealed that the crime took place on November 17, 2019, along the Oba-Obosi-Nkpor-Umuoji Road.

Ezike was reportedly part of a gang using tricycles for a "one-chance" robbery. He and two other gang members pretended to be a regular tricycle rider and passengers. They picked up Onwuegbuchunam, but halfway through the ride, they tried to rob him of his phone and other valuables.

When Onwuegbuchunam fought back and shouted for help, Ezike and his gang pushed him out of the speeding tricycle near Abidi Hall in Umuoji. This area had vigilante operatives on duty.

The vigilantes chased after the gang, causing Ezike to leave the tricycle and run away with his accomplices. He returned the next day to the spot where he had left the tricycle and was caught by the vigilante operatives. They handed him over to the police, where he confessed to the crime.

Unfortunately, Onwuegbuchunam suffered serious injuries and died two days later.

During the trial, the prosecution called five witnesses. This included a medical doctor who performed the post-mortem on Onwuegbuchunam. The doctor confirmed that his death was directly linked to the injuries he got from the fall.

The defense argued that there were no eyewitnesses to the crime. However, Justice Oyeka explained that the law allows three ways to convict someone: direct eyewitness testimony, confessions, and circumstantial evidence.

The judge pointed out that in this case, the circumstantial evidence was strong. It included the abandoned tricycle, Ezike's flight from the scene, his confession, and medical evidence connecting the victim's injuries to his actions.

As a result, the court found Ezike guilty of murder and sentenced him to death by hanging.
