US President Donald Trump said on Friday that he has made a deal with Denmark. This deal gives the US permanent control over security in Greenland.
The agreement allows the US to have permanent access, basing, and overflight rights in Greenland. It also lets the US set up more military bases if needed. The deal prevents Russia and China from establishing any bases in the Arctic area.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Mr Trump called the deal "historic," "special," and a "dream come true for the US."
Earlier this year, Mr Trump threatened to take over the Arctic island. He wanted Denmark to give up control of Greenland, which made European leaders nervous.
His request came after the US took President Nicholas Maduro of Venezuela. Mr Trump used security concerns to support his idea of annexing the island.
Greenland is the largest island in the world and is an autonomous territory under Denmark. Denmark is a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
Greenland is important because it is close to new shipping routes that connect North America and Eurasia. The island is located between North America and Europe in the Arctic.
It is just separated from Canada by the Nares Strait. Meanwhile, Russia's Arctic coastline runs along the Barents Sea, which is connected to the Arctic and North Atlantic waters around Greenland.
The island has large reserves of important minerals. Most of the island is covered by ice, but climate change is causing that ice to melt. This melting could make it easier to access these resources.
Mr Trump believes Greenland is key to his plan for a Golden Dome defense system. This system is meant to protect the US from missile attacks by Russia and China.
He also mentioned that Denmark does not invest enough in defense on the island. Later, he changed his tone and announced a framework deal with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
This new deal reportedly gives the US the power to build military structures on the island without asking Greenland or Denmark for permission.
Mr Trump stated that the deal provides the "United States permanent control over security and all other needs in Greenland, completely addressing all of our many US concerns. There will be no cost to the United States."
He added, "The US will forever have the complete ability to do what is necessary in Greenland to secure and defend the security of Greenland, and the United States of America."
The agreement also stops non-NATO countries from building bases in Greenland. It prevents adversaries from investing in Greenland in ways that could threaten the US.
Mr Trump said, "US adversaries can never have a base in Greenland, have a military presence in Greenland, or make sensitive investments in Greenland, without our express written approval."
