US President Donald Trump says Iran has agreed to the terms of a new deal. This deal would completely reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end what he called Iran's nuclear threat.
He shared this news on Truth Social. He announced that the US has stopped its planned attack on Iran in response to this development.
PREMIUM TIMES reported that America advised its citizens in the Middle East to consider leaving the region. This advice came ahead of the planned strikes and expected retaliation from Iran. The advisory also warned of possible flight cancellations, airspace closures, and travel disruptions.
Mr Trump stated on Sunday morning that Iran and other countries in the Middle East asked him to delay the attack. He mentioned that the planned attack would have been carried out with "levels of Military Terror, Strength, and Power not seen since World War II."
He added that this agreement depends on quickly finalizing the deal. He said, "Based on the request, I have agreed, for the future benefit of the WORLD and, likewise, the survival of a prosperous Iran, to cancel the attack, subject to being able to rapidly make a DEAL."
He continued, "The Country of Israel joins me in this commitment. Get to work, everybody, and get it DONE."
The fight for control of the Strait of Hormuz has put Iran and the US at odds throughout July. This comes after failed attempts to reach an agreement. Last month, Iran closed this important maritime route. In response, Mr Trump reimposed a naval blockade and increased sanctions on Iran. There were 13 straight days of attacks and counterattacks between the two countries, causing a rise in global oil prices.
The conflict began on 28 February when the US and Israel launched surprise attacks. This happened while Iran was still negotiating with the US. Now, this war has lasted five months, with a new battlefront in the Red Sea between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis.
