Television host Morayo Afolabi-Brown has shared a disturbing story about a phone call she received. An individual cursed her for the questions she asked guests during her interviews.
Brown, who hosts The Morayo Show and used to co-host TVC’s Your View, talked about the incident in a video on her Instagram on Friday. She felt upset that someone would attack her for just doing her job as an interviewer.
The caller used many “unprintable words” and repeatedly cursed her over her interview questions. Brown said, “I got a call from somebody who rained curses on me. She said, she said, she said, and so many other unprintable words.”
Brown mentioned that she did not grow up around people who used curses. She has learned to ignore negative comments on social media over the years. “I’ve been dragged on social media for many years for different reasons. So I don’t read those messages because it’s not my kind of thing. But for somebody to have the privilege of having my phone number and calling me and raining curses on me… what’s my sin? The kind of questions I ask guests or the names I call during my interviews?”
Recently, she faced criticism for some questions she asked, including one about a person’s experience at a funeral. Brown defended her approach by pointing to her long career in the media, saying she has the right to ask tough questions.
“I’ve been in the media for 21 years. I’ve been on television for 12 years, every single day, Monday to Friday, hosting a TV show. There are only a handful of Nigerians who have that experience. If there’s anybody in this country that has the right to ask anybody any kind of question, it is I. I’ve earned it.”
She added that if she were to interview world leaders, she would not be afraid to ask challenging questions. “If Donald Trump comes here tomorrow, I will ask him whatever the heck I want to ask him.”
Brown explained that she respects her guests’ boundaries. Some guests prefer to see questions ahead of time, while others just mention topics they do not want to discuss. “I respect my guests. Some of them, I give them the questions, tell me what they want to answer. Others, I give them a scope. The people that I know I flow with, we flow. I don’t need to ask them any questions. I just say, ‘Don’t go to this area, don’t go to that area,’ and it’s fine.”
She made it clear that her show is not about embarrassing or attacking guests. “My show is not for criticising and bashing people. My show is a show where we give love and joy.”
Brown expressed her disappointment about the incident. She said asking questions is the core of her job. “It’s quite disheartening for somebody to call me and rain curses at me because I asked a question. It’s my job, for heaven’s sake, to ask questions. That’s my job.”
Her comments come as her celebrity interviews spark conversations. This includes her chat with veteran actress Ireti Doyle, who refused to discuss her divorce on The Morayo Show, saying it was “none of your business.” Brown has also faced attention for questions to actress Toyin Abraham about her reported rift with Funke Akindele, as well as during an interview with former Babatunde Fashola.
