Two Arrested with Pistol in Anambra

The police in Anambra State have arrested two men for having a six-round English-made pistol. They caught the suspects during a stop-and-search operation in Nnewi, Nnewi North Local Government Area.

On Sunday, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the police spokesman, shared details about the operation. It happened on Saturday and involved officers from the Rapid Response Squad and Police Mobile Force 54.

Ikenga said the police stopped the two men while they were riding a Tiger 150 motorcycle that had no registration number. The operation aimed to keep the area safe and visible.

The suspects are Ekwulugo Chiemierie Joseph, who is 33 years old, and Enyiobi Geoffrey Somtochukwu, aged 29.

He stated, "The recovery was made on the evening of September 26, when the joint team, while conducting visibility patrol within the Nnewi North metropolis, stopped two male persons travelling on a Tiger 150 motorcycle without a registration number."

Ikenga continued, "The men, identified as Ekwulugo Chiemierie Joseph, aged 33 years, and Enyiobi Geoffrey Somtochukwu, aged 29 years, were subjected to a search during which the firearm was recovered."

The suspects are now in custody. They are helping the police with their investigation. The police want to find out how they got the gun and what they planned to do with it.

Investigators are also checking other details related to the case. They want to see if there are more connections that could help the investigation.

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, said this recovery shows why police visibility is important. He emphasized the need for well-planned stop-and-search operations as part of their community policing strategy.

He mentioned that such operations help to spot and stop the movement of guns and other dangerous weapons that might lead to violent crimes.

CP Ama assured people in Nnewi and across Anambra that the police will keep up their proactive patrols and intelligence-led operations. They will continue these stop-and-search activities throughout the state.

He urged the public to stay alert. He asked everyone to report any suspicious people or activities to the police as soon as possible.
