The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed that they arrested two officers from the Ogun State Community, Social Orientation and Safety Corps, known as So-Safe Corps. This is in connection with the death of a man named Success. Reports say he died from injuries he got after the officers allegedly tortured him.
The command’s public relations officer, Babaseyi Oluseyi, shared this news in a brief reply to our correspondent on Tuesday.
Oluseyi said the officers are now in custody after the incident.
“I can confirm that we have the officers involved in custody,” he stated.
PUNCH Metro reported that the incident began with a fight between Success and his mother on Saturday in the Oju-Ore area of Ogun State.
Success’s mother told some So-Safe officers about the situation, and they took him into their custody.
But instead of handing him over to the police, the officers allegedly took him to an unfinished building where they beat him badly.
Sadly, the victim later died from the injuries he suffered during the alleged torture.
A source who knows about the incident claimed that the officers beat Success for a long time after taking him from his family home.
Meanwhile, the leadership of the So-Safe Corps said they are working with the police to make sure justice is done.
Moruf Adekunle, the spokesperson for the corps, condemned the officers' actions. He said this was against the organization’s rules.
He explained that the officers acted outside their duties and did not follow standard procedures.
“The mother called us to help, and some of our personnel responded. They were supposed to report the matter to the right authorities, but they took the law into their own hands,” Adekunle said.
“Once we learned of the incident, we handed over the first officer to the Nigerian Police Force and later handed over the second officer for investigation and prosecution.
“The commandant does not support any form of human rights abuse. We are working with the police to ensure justice is served,” Adekunle added.
He also mentioned that the state commander of the corps, Soji Ganzallo, has continuously warned staff against human rights violations, illegal detention, and involvement in cases beyond their jurisdiction.
This incident has once again raised alarms about alleged torture and unlawful actions by some security personnel in the country.
In recent years, human rights groups and civil society organizations have often called for more accountability and tougher penalties for security officers found guilty of torture and other human rights abuses.
The police said they are still investigating the circumstances surrounding Success’s death.
