The Imo State Police Command has arrested two people linked to the murder of an Inspector, Henry Effiong. He was a security aide to Chief Rex Anunobi, the state Commissioner for Trade, Commerce, and Investment.
The police have also started looking for other suspects involved in the killing.
DSP Henry Okoye, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, shared this news in a statement on Wednesday.
Effiong was found dead at the commissioner’s home in Owerri on Monday, soon after the incident was reported.
A source, who wanted to stay anonymous, claimed that the inspector was beheaded by his attackers, and his service rifle was stolen. The source expressed concern, saying, "The beheading of a police inspector at the residence of a serving commissioner in Imo State and the taking away of his service rifle call for serious concern."
The source added, "This should not be taken for granted. The person who is now at large should be arrested immediately. He has a lot to offer in unearthing the motive behind this dastardly act."
According to the police spokesperson, 31-year-old Olivia Patrick and 25-year-old ThankGod Maurice were arrested at the scene right after the incident was reported.
Okoye said that the Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, Audu Garba Bosso, has ordered a thorough investigation. This will help find out what happened and bring those responsible to justice.
He added that the police chief has instructed the investigation team to make sure that anyone found guilty is prosecuted according to the law.
Bosso called the killing a "painful reminder of the risks and sacrifices police officers face in the discharge of their duties" and extended condolences to the family of the late inspector.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigations Department, along with the Divisional Police Officer of New Owerri Division, visited the site. They carried out necessary examinations and collected important evidence.
The remains of the deceased inspector were taken to a mortuary afterward.
The case has now been moved to the SCID for further investigation. Efforts to catch other suspects who are still on the run are ongoing.
Bosso assured the family of the deceased officer that the command is dedicated to ensuring justice is served. He also mentioned that the situation is under control and that proper security measures are in place to protect lives and property across the state.
The CP urged the public to stay alert and share any credible information that could help with the ongoing investigation.
