The Jigawa State Police have caught two people for allegedly damaging a streetlight cable and an electrical transformer in New Gwaram and Auyo Local Government Areas.
This information came from a statement shared with journalists in Dutse, the state capital, on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Shi’isu Adam.
Adam said the first suspect was arrested on September 25, 2026, for cutting the cable of a streetlight in New Gwaram Town. He named the suspect as Aminu Musa, 38, from New Gwaram Town in Gwaram LGA.
The PPRO stated, "The suspect, who operates a streetlight generator in the area, was caught by police while committing the crime." He mentioned that the suspect was taken to the police station and relevant evidence was collected from the crime scene.
Adam added, "A preliminary investigation was done, and the case has been sent to court for prosecution."
In another case, the PPRO said that on September 29, 2026, the police got a tip from Ayan village in Auyo LGA about a second suspect who had been caught by locals. He identified this suspect as Laminu Sha’aibu, 26, from Gumusuwa Village in Kafin Hausa LGA.
He said, "The suspect was arrested at Maskangayu Village in Auyo LGA with stolen transformer coils and was about to be attacked by a mob." Adam explained that when the police got the information, they quickly rushed to the scene, rescued the suspect, and took him to the nearest Primary Health Centre for treatment.
The suspect was treated and later discharged. The police also recovered the vandalized transformer. Adam said, "During the investigation, the suspect admitted that he had spent three nights dismantling the transformer without being caught."
The police spokesperson noted that the Command is still investigating to find out more about the crime and if anyone else was involved. He confirmed, "After the investigation is done, both cases will be taken to the appropriate court for prosecution according to the law."
The Commissioner of Police, CP Tijjani Murtala, praised the public for their quick action that helped the police arrest the suspects. Adam quoted the CP as encouraging residents to stay alert and quickly report any suspicious activities, especially attempts to damage electricity installations, streetlights, and other public properties.
The Commissioner also assured the people of the state that the Command will keep working with communities and other stakeholders to protect public property and make sure those responsible are punished.
