UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham is getting more pressure over what he said about Manchester City after the club was found guilty of breaking Premier League financial rules.

BBC Sport reported on Thursday that several Premier League clubs are worried about the prime minister’s comments. Some senior figures are asking if his words could make it look like there is political interference in the independent process about Manchester City.

Burnham told the BBC he would be "really concerned" if the owners of Manchester City decided to sell the club after the verdict.

His comments took some senior officials at rival clubs by surprise. They wondered what he was trying to achieve with those remarks.

Downing Street has made it clear that Burnham thinks no one should be "above the rules". Still, his comments are getting more attention, especially since Manchester City’s appeal has not yet been heard.

The case against Manchester City was looked at by an independent commission after a 42-day hearing in 2024. The commission found the club guilty of breaking financial rules. A separate hearing for sanctions is still to come.

Manchester City has denied any wrongdoing and plans to challenge the verdict before an independent appeal board.

This issue has also raised questions about Burnham’s ties with Manchester City’s owners from Abu Dhabi while he was mayor of Greater Manchester. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch is asking for details of meetings between the prime minister and top figures linked to the club.

Even with the worries from some Premier League officials, another club source said the level of attention on Burnham would make any political interference tough. The Premier League has emphasized that the disciplinary process is independent. They say Manchester City’s appeal and any possible sanctions will follow the usual procedures.

Senior officials from other clubs have called Burnham’s comments "absolutely bizarre". They said it was "at best naive and at worst quite manipulative, and that is not a good look".

One official described the comments as "clumsy". Another said they were shocked that the prime minister had "misspoken".
