What is Supernatural Rest?

Supernatural rest is often misunderstood in the Christian community. Many people think of rest as doing nothing, just waiting for God's help. But in God's Kingdom, rest is not about being inactive. It means being sure you will see results. It is a spiritual balance where your work aligns with God's plans, ensuring that everything you do will bring results at the right time and in the right amount.

To truly rest means to move from struggling without results to a place where you expect good outcomes. When someone works without this rest, they feel frustration, like working hard but getting little in return. But when they find God’s rest, their results become much greater than their efforts because God is backing them up.

As we go through life, we need to see that rest is part of a promise from God. It is written in the Bible:

“There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.”, Hebrews 4:9

“Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.”, Matthew 11:29

“And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.”, Exodus 33:14

“And the LORD gave them rest round about, according to all that he sware unto their fathers: and there stood not a man of all their enemies before them; the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hand.”, Joshua 21:44

“So the realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet: for his God gave him rest round about.”, 2 Chronicles 20:30

When this kind of rest comes into someone’s life, it changes everything.

King Solomon expressed this peaceful state in his message to King Hiram: “But now the LORD my God hath given me rest on every side, so that there is neither adversary nor evil occurrent” (1 Kings 5:4). This is what every believer should expect, peace on every side.

But we need to break a common misunderstanding: God is not the only one responsible for your rest.

While God gives rest freely, it is up to you to activate and keep that rest. God will not do what you have the ability to do yourself. Every promise from God comes with conditions. If you wait for God to act without doing your part, you will face ongoing frustration. To experience and stay in your season of rest, you must take responsibility for the actions that create it.

The Importance of Responsibility in Finding Rest

God’s Kingdom runs on principles. One key principle is the Law of Collaborative Responsibility. Grace gives us the chance, but it is our faith and responsibility that bring the experience. In the Bible, whenever God wanted to bring someone into rest, He asked for a specific action.

Here are some stories of people in the Bible who took action to find their rest:

The Woman with the Issue of Blood (Luke 8:43-48): This woman suffered for twelve years. She spent all her money on doctors and only got worse. Her rest did not come by waiting at home. It came when she took action, pushing through a crowd to touch Jesus’ clothes. Her faith brought her healing and rest.

Isaac (Genesis 26:1-22): In a famine, Isaac could have run to Egypt like his father. But he stayed in Gerar, following God’s instruction. He took responsibility by digging wells even when others blocked them. Eventually, he found success, and God gave him rest. Isaiah 1:19 says, “If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land.”

Jacob (Genesis 32:1-32): For over twenty years, Jacob lived in fear and deceit. His rest began when he recognized his true self. Alone at the river Jabbok, he wrestled with an angel and admitted, “I am Jacob.” This moment of honesty changed his life, leading to a resolution with his brother.

Joseph (Genesis 37-41): Joseph faced many hardships for about thirteen years. Despite his challenges, he held on to his integrity. When tempted, he chose to stay true to himself. His faithfulness led him from prison to becoming the prime minister of Egypt, bringing rest to his family.

Job (Job 1-2, 42): Job lost everything but held onto his faith. He said, “Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him” (Job 13:15). Because he stayed true to God, He restored Job, giving him a legendary season of rest.

Joshua (Joshua 1-21): After Moses died, Joshua became the leader. God told him, “Be strong and of a good courage.” Joshua did not wait for the walls of Jericho to fall. He organized his army, strategized, crossed the Jordan, and fought battles. His hard work led to the rest God promised.

Ruth (Ruth 1-4): Ruth was a young widow from Moab. Instead of giving up, she showed loyalty to her mother-in-law, Naomi. By working hard in Boaz’s fields and following Naomi’s advice, she found her redemption, marrying Boaz and overcoming her troubles.

Hannah (1 Samuel 1): Each year, Hannah faced mockery for not having children. Her breakthrough came when she changed her prayers. She made a vow to God, saying, “If thou wilt look on the affliction of thine handmaid… and wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life.” She prayed sincerely and had Samuel, ending her sorrow.

Elizabeth and Zechariah (Luke 1): This couple served God faithfully but had no children. They continued to serve in their priestly duties. Their commitment led to the angel Gabriel announcing the birth of John the Baptist, ending their years of waiting.

The Early Church and Paul (Acts 9:1-31): After Saul met Jesus, the early church faced challenges. People like Barnabas took responsibility to support Saul and help him integrate with the apostles. The church chose to forgive and accept him. Because of this effort, “Then had the churches rest throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied.”
