The US and Iran hit back at each other on Tuesday night after an American Apache helicopter was shot down near the Strait of Hormuz. This incident has increased tensions in the Middle East.

The US launched strikes targeting Iranian air defenses, ground control stations, and surveillance radar sites near the Strait of Hormuz. This action came after an Iranian attack that took down the US helicopter. President Donald Trump described the attack as unacceptable.

“The United States must, of necessity, respond to this attack,” Mr Trump told ABC News.

“This is a response to what they did with our helicopter last night, and I believe the response should be very strong, very powerful, and that’s what this one is,” he added. He also said, “I believe in responding in a strong manner. I always have throughout my life. We have a deal that was very good, and probably will be. But this is a response to what they did with our helicopter last night, and I believe the response should be very strong, very powerful, and that’s what this one is.”

The US Central Command posted on X that the “mission is a proportional response to unjustified Iranian aggression.”

In response, Iran fired missiles and drones at US bases in the Middle East. The strikes aimed at the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain and an airbase in Jordan.

The Iranian military stated that its missiles hit and destroyed four important targets at the base, including hangars for F-35 fighter jets and a main command and control center, according to Al Jazeera. They described the missile strike as part of a wider retaliatory operation, which also included the downing of a US MQ-9 drone over Iranian airspace.

These strikes took place during a ceasefire both sides had agreed to after a conflict that began on February 28 when the US and Israel attacked Iran.

A peace deal between the US and Iran, which Mr Trump had claimed would be finalized in a few days, is now uncertain. The US leader had said he did not want to allow any action that could jeopardize the deal, but the US military response raises the risk of escalating the war.

On Monday, Iran and Israel exchanged attacks for hours before they decided to stop, with reports indicating that Mr Trump’s intervention played a role. The IRGC accused the US and Israel of not keeping their promises and violating the ceasefire by repeatedly attacking Iranian shores and vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, the Sea of Oman, and the Indian Ocean.

On Wednesday morning, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi posted on X, saying the US had chosen to test Tehran’s resolve “despite its defeat on the battlefield.” He warned that Iran’s armed forces would “leave no attack or threat unanswered.”

“Leave our region if you want to be safe. History of the Persian Gulf has many chapters on the dire fates of intruding outsiders,” he said.
