Woman Arrested for Death of 97-Year-Old Grandmother in Katsina

The Katsina State Police have arrested a 20-year-old woman named Aisha Muktar Hassan. She is accused of causing the death of her 97-year-old grandmother, Hajiya Ummukhulsum Hassan. This incident happened during a family dispute in Daura Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The police said the fight took place on June 12, 2026, around 7:00 pm. An argument broke out between Aisha and her grandmother, which turned violent.

This information came from a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abubakar Sadiq. He shared the details with reporters on Wednesday.

Muktar Muhammad Hassan, Aisha's father, 39, reported the incident at the Sabon Garin Daura Police Station. He told the police that his daughter had a disagreement with her grandmother on the same evening.

According to the police statement, "The Katsina State Police Command has arrested Aisha Muktar Hassan, female, aged 20, who is suspected in the death of her 97-year-old paternal grandmother, Hajiya Ummukhulsum Hassan, in Daura LGA, Katsina State.

"On June 12, 2026, around 8:00 pm, Muktar Muhammad Hassan, male, aged 39, reported at Sabon Garin Daura Police Station that at about 7:00 pm, his daughter Aisha Muktar Hassan had a misunderstanding with her grandmother. During the dispute, the suspect hit the victim on the head with a wooden chair."

When police arrived, they found Hajiya Ummukhulsum unconscious in a pool of blood. They quickly took her to the nearest hospital for treatment. Sadly, a doctor later confirmed she had died while being treated.

After the incident, police arrested Aisha. She admitted to what happened during questioning. She is now in custody and will be taken to court once the investigation is over.

The police statement added, "Further developments will be communicated in due course."
