Yobo believes Iwobi can beat Musa's record

Former Super Eagles captain Joseph Yobo has said that Alex Iwobi can surpass Ahmed Musa as Nigeria’s most-capped player, according to The PUNCH.

Iwobi became the fourth Nigerian player to get 100 caps when he played in the 2-1 friendly loss to Portugal in June. He joined Yobo, Vincent Enyeama, and Musa in this exclusive club, with Musa holding the record of 110 appearances.

Yobo thinks the record is possible if Iwobi stays healthy.

“I would not be surprised to see Alex getting to 130 or 130-plus because he is still very active,” Yobo told ESPN.

“He is still performing at the highest level. You always pray and hope you do not get injured because these things can derail you.”

Iwobi has been steady for the Super Eagles over the last ten years. He has been a regular under many coaches and has given reliable performances in midfield.

The former Arsenal player made his Nigeria debut in October 2015 against DR Congo after switching from England’s youth teams. He was just 19 then.

The 30-year-old is the nephew of Austin Jay-Jay Okocha and is still active in the Premier League with Fulham. He has a good chance of breaking the Super Eagles record if he keeps fit and dedicated.

Coach Eric Chelle is likely to keep counting on him as Nigeria starts their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

The Super Eagles will host Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on September 25. They will then travel to face Guinea-Bissau on September 29.

Iwobi, who got to camp early, said the team is ready for the challenge.

“Everyone is in high spirits. We are all determined to win the game. Madagascar is a good team, but we will beat them,” he said.
