At least 15 people lost their lives in a road accident at the Muslim Cemetery area on the Ogbomoso, Oko Olowo road of the Ilorin-Jebba Expressway in Kwara.
Mr Kabir Kazeem, the Kwara Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, confirmed this sad news in a statement to reporters on Monday in Ilorin.
Kazeem said the deadly accident happened around 2:32 AM. It involved a single DAF XF truck with the registration number GWL 274 XC.
The sector commander reported that 48 men were in the truck during the accident. Out of them, 15 were confirmed dead, 17 suffered different injuries, while 16 were unhurt.
He explained that the crash was caused by driver fatigue. Many victims had fractures, dislocations, and bruises from the accident.
Kazeem mentioned that the injured were taken to Arewa Medical Centre and Baki Hospital for medical care.
He added that the bodies of those who died were given to their families through the Sarkin Hausawa of Oko Olowo in the Moro Local Government Area of Kwara.
Kazeem said the search was still on for anyone who might be trapped under the truck's load.
He noted that the rescue effort was a joint operation by officers from RS8.15 Oloru Unit Command and RS8.1 Kwara Command (Oko Olowo Outpost).
The FRSC boss stated that the command plans to increase public awareness through town hall meetings with important groups.
He also warned drivers to avoid mixed loading, night driving, and driving when tired.
